I hope I'm not 'over-thinking "this issue to the level of education is doing, but … All options are a part of the reaction force of the ball. 1) If the player does not have a good grip of the glove, the ball could push the glove hand of the player. 2) the glove has mass. That mass will combine with the momentum of the ball, thus slowing the ball. 3) if the player was standing on a frictionless surface, the ball affect his glove to push players back. Since the player may not move when the ball hits his glove, there must be some friction between the shoes of players and the field. 4) the muscular effort is needed to keep the ball from player to push the arm back.
